december chrysanthemums

The chrysanthemums
were yellow or white
until the frost.

Godō's death poem (1801)

Note on a note:

"Ladies moistened a bit of chrysanthemum-patterned brocade with dew from chrysanthemum flowers, rubbed their cheeks with it to smooth the wrinkles of age (since chrysanthemum dew conferred immortal youth), and composed poems lamenting the sorrows of growing old", says Royall Tyler in his notes on The Tale of Genji (which he translated into English).

(i am still searching for a chrysanthemum-patterned brocade to photograph it for the Bridge, against snow and delicate fingers, like faded petals themselves)

  3. Flowers that fade with the frost; only to bloom again in the spring, if we can just survive the winter...

    Warm thoughts to the floating bridge as the snows of Siberia grow deeper and deeper... and winter only begins tomorrow...

  4. it is in the beauty of this world and your uninterested attachment that will give you the dew of chrysanthemum. perhaps even their subtle flavor will be trapped inside the perfect roundness of youth elixir.
    you have the eye of the angels the way you see things.

  6. This is like/unlike the Cumaean Sibyl who also wanted eternal life ... only she forgot to ask for eternal youth.

    "For I myself once saw with my own eyes the Sibyl hanging in her jar, and when the boys asked her, 'Sibyl, what do you want?' she answered 'I want to die.'"

    his favorite bridge...oh (a candid ohist), more to the point, his favorite poem... endlessly recurring...

  11. "i am still searching for a chrysanthemum-patterned brocade to photograph it for the Bridge, against snow and delicate fingers, like faded petals themselves"

    the sentence as such already fills me with visual delight!

    Im Wald nur gefallene Blätter;
    Nirgends mehr sind wilde Chrysanthemen zu sehen.
    Neben meiner Einsiedelei steht ein alter Bambushain;
    Unverändert erwartet er meine Rückkehr.
    (Meister Ryokan...:-)!)

    ... von Renée(und ich bin fast sprachlos gegenüber diesen Bildern, die von einer engelsgleichen Reinheit, und fast ist man irritiert; wie viele verschiedene Leben es doch gibt auf Deiner Brücke... Und ich komme und gehe und komme, für Dich :-)!)

  13. The first, light bright chrysanthemum makes me think of a girl skating in youthful abandon along a frozen blue canal, her voluptuous crinolines billowing behind her as she speeds headlong towards her unknown destiny.

    The second, darkly hued flower is that unknown destiny manifested, and the now older woman sitting still in the darkness, reflecting on the light that still glows deeply within.

  14. We don't see chrysanthemums in December here, so just the thought of it evokes a kind of magic. The flower you have shown to us here will live in my memory.

    If I ever see the brocade I will buy it for you.
